Hi, I’m Sinclair. It is the Fourth of July weekend and there will a lot of people at the beach. Most beaches are safe but there are several in the U.S. that have been known for shark attacks. Although shark attacks are uncommon, it is good to be aware of what beaches may have sharks in the area.
The first beach is Myrtle Beach in South Carolina. There are about forty species of sharks native to the South Carolina waters. Some are docile and some can be aggressive. The more people in the water, the better the chance a shark may attack.
In California, there is an area called the Red Triangle. The red triangle extends between Point Reyes and Monterey Bay to past the Farallon Islands. Due to the large seal population in the area, it attracts the great white shark. The area includes Bolinas and Stinson beach.
Another area is Brevard County, Florida, home of the space center at Cape Canaveral and Cocoa and Melbourne beach. The area is also dangerous due to rip currents and intense lightening.
The beaches of the Hawaiian Islands are another area where sharks can be found. There are about forty species of shark in the islands with the tiger shark being the most aggressive.
Ranked as the number one spot for sharks is Volusia County in Florida. New Smyrna Beach is known as the “shark capital of the world.” Although there is a high incidence of shark bites, most bites are mild and non-fatal.
If you are attacked by shark, here are some tips for survival.
- Don’t play dead and try to get away as fast as you can.
- Try to hit the shark on the nose
- Go for the eyes and gills on the shark.
- If a shark is approaching you, stay still and quiet.
- Try to back up against a reef or piling.
- Shout to get other people’s attention.
- Keep pets out of the water.
- If you are bleeding, do not go into the water.
- If you notice fish and turtles are acting strange, a shark maybe around.
- Swim with a buddy and not at night.
- Do not go in unknown waters.
- Do not wear bright colors or jewelry.
- Research the area to see if sharks are usually present.
