100_0309Hi, I’m Sunny.   As I am gazing out the window, I reflecting on this Fourth of July and the city of Atlanta.   I moved here 3 years ago and thought I would share the history of this great Southern city.

Atlanta is the capital and largest city in Georgia.  With a population of over half a million people, it is the 33th largest city in the United States and and the largest in the Southeast.   Atlanta is an important business and transportation hub.

Atlanta was originally an Indian village called Standing Peachtree.   In 1822, it was sold by the Cherokees and Creeks to white settlers.   In 1836, a plan to build a railroad to the midwest was established.   After the Cherokees were forced to move from the area, the railroad was started.   In 1847, as the area grew, the name of Atlanta was adopted.

During the Civil War, Atanta became a major transportation and military supply point in the South.  With the invasion by General Sherman and the Union Army, Atlanta was burned to the ground.   After the war, the city was rebuilt and became the capital of Georgia.

Atlanta played a large role in the Civil Rights movement inn the 1960s.    In 1996, the city hosted the Summer Olympics and Centennial Olympic Park represents that event.

Major business, Coca Cola, Turner Broadcasting, Home Depot and Delta Airlines to name a few, make Atlanta their home.   There is plenty to see and do in the city with the Coca Cola museum, the Aquarium, major professional sports teams and cultural events.  In Atlanta, there are many locations that reflect on the city’s role in American history.
