Hi, I’m Sunny. I want to share some information on caring for a kitten. If you decide to have a cat as a pet and you start out with a kitten, there are some things you need to be aware of in the caring of a kitten. A kitten should be taken from its’ litter between 10 and 16 weeks. This will allow the kitten to be healthy and used to the environment.
Your next step is off to the veterinarian. The kitten’s immune system is still developing at this time. The veterinarian will exam the kitten and immunize it. The veterinarian will make sure there are no potential problems with the kitten.
Here are some precautions to make sure your house is safe for the kitten.
- Keep toxic solutions like cleaning fluids and medications in a locked cabinet.
- Try to remove small objects that can be chewed and swallowed.
- Block off stairs and ledges.
- Keep the toilet covered.
- Be aware of heavy, unstable objects like vases and statues.
- Cover exposed electrical cords.
- Keep plants out of reach.
- Confine the kitten to a crate or one room when not in the house.
Because the kitten is active and experiencing a high growth rate, the food should be a high quality kitten food. After six months, the kitten can start eating adult cat food.
A kitten should be introduced to touching by a human and brushing right away. Be gentle and go slow if the kitten seems afraid. Ear cleaning and toenail clipping should soon follow. Be careful with the toenails because they are small and hard to see.
These tips will help keep your kitten safe and adapt to its’ new home quickly. The kitten will mature into a healthy and friendly cat.
