Hi, I’m Sinclair. The 2009 British Open is being played at Turnberry Golf Resort. The resort is located in South Ayrshire on the coast of the outer Firth of Clyde in southwestern Scotland.
The resort has three golf courses, a golf academy and a 5-star hotel. The resort was purchased in 1997 and operated by Westin until October, 2008. Leisurecorp of Dubai World purchased the resort in October, 20o8.
The Alisa Course has hosted three British Opens in 1977, 1986 and 1994. The eighteen hole on the course is named “Duel in the Sun” after the 1977 match between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson. The course also hosted the Women’s British Open in 2002, the Walker Cup in 1963 and Senior Open Championship in 1987-1990, 2003 and 2006.
The other courses at Turnberry are Kintyre and nine hole Arran. All three courses had been rebuilt after World War II. During the war, the resort was used as a hospital and the courses flattened and used as an airfield. The Colin Montgomerie Golf Academy and a pitch and putt course are also at the resort.
