100_0235Hi, I’m Midnite.  I was watching “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader” hosted by Jeff Foxworthy last night.  The show featured Jack Hanna as a contestant.

Jack Hanna is the Director Emeritus of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Powell, Ohio.   Jack, also known as Jungle Jack, is one of the best know and best liked animal experts in the U.S.

Jack grew up on his father’s farm outside of Knoxville, Tennessee.  While growing up, he worked for a veterinarian where he acquired his love of animals.   He attended Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio where he majored in business and political science.  After graduation, he opened a pet shop and petting zoo.  In 1973, he moved to Florida and directed a small Sanford zoo and the Florida Central Zoo.  In 1978, he returned to Ohio to run the Columbus zoo.

To increase the awareness of the Columbus zoo,  he hosted a television show called “Hanna’s Ark” from 1981 to 1983.   He has appeared on many television shows like David Letterman and Good Morning America and brought a variety of animals with him.   From 1993 to 2007, he hosted “Jack Hanna’s Animal Adventures”.   In 2007, he started a new series called “Jack Hanna Into the Wild’ which won an Emmy for Outstanding Children’s Series.  He has authored several books including his autobiography, “Jungle Jack: My Wild Life”.   He expects to retire soon at his home in Montana.
